Cons

  • The designs and templates are quite limited and not so eye-catchy

Nobody seems to like a popup on any website. It's constantly claimed that it ruins the user experience.

However, there is a reason pop-ups are used on so many websites and marketers love it.

It quite simply works and is one of the best strategies for lead generation and building an email list.

There is no shortage of choices when it comes to popup builders. Poptin is one of those with a good all-round feature list and an extensive range of integrations.

How good is it to use and how it compares to other similar tools? Well, let us find out in this review.

Dashboard & user interface

The main dashboard of Poptin is really well designed with an excellent overview of all the essential data like visitors, conversions and conversion rates.

Poptin dashboard

Stats can be viewed for a particular day, week, month, last 7 days, last 30 days, all-time stats or across any custom duration that can be set easily.

There are four different themes with different sets of color schemes for the dashboard. A nice touch.

It is easy to navigate to the popups and forms built with a few clicks. Overall, it is a very intuitive and neat interface with minimal distraction.

Popup builder

The first step to build the popups is to define the goal of your popup whether it is to get leads, increase sales, make announcements, etc. Based on the goal selected, you get a set of popup templates to choose from.

Poptin popup goals

Once the goal of the popup is defined, the next step is to select the type and template.

The following types of popups can be built with Poptin.

  1. Lightbox
  2. Bar
  3. Slide-in
  4. Fullscreen
  5. Social
  6. Mobile-only

Although other types of templates are available in most of the popup builders, mobile-only templates are really unique and neat in Poptin.

Poptin mobile templates

After selecting the template, give the popup a name for future reference and enter the domain you want to use the popup on.

Poptin popup setup

The next step is to customize the popup design to match it with your brand's colors.

Poptin allows for quite extensive design flexibility including button colors, animations, background colors & images, shadow effects, border colors, etc.

Poptin design

When someone submits the button, the popup can be set to be closed or can be linked to a separate URL or a thank you screen can be displayed.

The following elements can be added to a popup,

  • Text
  • Button
  • Image
  • Shapes
  • Video
  • Timer
  • Icons
  • HTML code

Poptin elements

The video element is quite cool. It is as simple as to drag and drop the video element and link it to the video URL. Videos can also be set up to autoplay once the popup displays.

The following input fields can be added to the popups.

  • Name
  • Email
  • Phone
  • Message
  • Consent checkbox
  • Website
  • Date
  • Custom checkbox
  • Radio buttons

Display rules and targeting

After the design customization is completed, specific rules and targets can be set up for the popup display.

These include the following display triggers to display the popup.

  • Exit intent - Only when the visitor is about to leave the page,
  • Time delay - After the visitor has spent a specific amount of time on the web page,
  • Page scroll - After a certain percentage of the page is scrolled by the visitor,
  • Page count - Only after the visitor has visited more than a specific number of pages on a website,
  • Clicks count - Only after a visitor has clicked more than a specific number of times on a page.

Poptin display triggers

Apart from the above display triggers, it is also possible to set up targeting whereby the popup is displayed only on a specific device type like Desktop, mobile or a tablet.

Page targeting lets to display the popup only on specific pages on a website.

The last setting is the display frequency where you can set the frequency of the popup display or select the visitor type to show the popup, new, returning or both.

Additional to these basic display triggers and targeting options, there are a few more advanced targeting options as well that can be set up to display the pop up only on these specific conditions,

  • Dates and time limit - Only within a specific time limit by entering a start and end date,
  • Days and hours - Only on specific days in a week and within a specific time on a day,
  • Traffic source - To show or not depending on which channel the page click comes from. Available options are direct visits, social traffic, organic search engine traffic, and Google ads,
  • Geo-targeting - Only to the specified countries,
  • Cookie targeting - Only to visitors with a specific cookie,
  • Title tag targeting - Only on pages with a specific title tag,
  • View count - This stops to display the popup after a specific amount of views,
  • IP Blocking - Stops displaying the popup to visitors within a specific IP range.

Overall, display targeting is one of the strengths of Poptin compared to other similar tools. It is extensive with so many triggers that will fulfill the use case of even advanced level users.
